PHOTO OF THE WEEK
August 2 - August 8, 2010

In December 2009, our staff 'found' Rekha. Very thin and very sick. She was suffering from tuberculosis and so weak, the doctor didn't dare to give her the medicines. We adopted Rekha in our emergency food-programme and slowly she was gaining weight and started the medicines. Today, she works in Duniya Decoration, making baby blankets (which can be ordered here >>>). This is a good example of how Duniya works...: we cannot change the world, we can make a difference in someone's world! Dear Rekha: welcome to the Duniya Decoration team. Asha and staff: well done!

This week is a very special week: 60 children with severe burns undergo surgery in Lao Cai, paid by Duniya. Our mobile medical team is present, Dong An (NGO CII) co-ordinates the operations and aftercare and Myrna Eijsenring, a specialist in 'Special Education, is there as well and keeps us posted. She will send us images when she returns to Hanoi, somewhere next week. We wish Dr. Hung and Dr. Dao and the rest of the team all the best, this intensive week.

Last week, our team was confronted with an emergency situation: Anita needed a caesarian urgently. Our team dealt with this situation very well, and we would like to share our social worker and teacher Nisha's mail with you. Literally. We feel it illustrates very well the difficult situation they are confronted with.
"Thank you very much for your nice email.
I send you, some photos of Anita and her baby, the baby is quite fine and Anita too,
Nobody is there to take care of Anita and her child , only her Father is there to take care of her and her child who cannot see anything properly, her husband and mother-in-law have run away somewhere because of no reason, we think they don’t want to take Anita to their home anymore and wants to make a second marriage. As you know she has deliver a child by scissarian so she needs better care and some kinds of good nutrition by which she can recover fast.
Both the mother and father are staying with her and looking after the child and mother they don’t have time to cook food for her, actually they don’t have anything at home to cook.
The condition of this family is poorest even they don’t have clean clothes for Anita and for her baby.
So we have arranged two times Tiffin box for Anita and her parents. We hope what we have done and arranged for Anita and for her child you are also Agree with the situation they are suffering with.
The story of delivery time:- She was suffering with severe delivery pain from last two days then we decided to take her to the hospital, the doctors tried at least five six hours to do it a normal delivery but it was not successful .the doctors decided to make a scissarian delivery and informed us if we will do late then it will be dangers for both mother and child. As you know it was unfortunately Sunday and the Centre was closed , so we were finding ourselves unable to inform you in time then we phoned you many times but the phone of your side was not responding.
We had no choice then we said to the doctors OK.
We knew we will make our people understand, we trust the trust between us.
We all are very thankful to all of you that you helped Anita very much in difficult time and the Anita family have no words to say anything."
These are situations for which we need a medical emergency fund...
In the photo you see the grandfather (Anita's father) and the newborn. Anita, the mother, is more or less blind and Duniya will continue to support this family.

Do you remember Pretty? The little girl who couldn't do much more than lying on a charpoi (bed) in 2008? Who went to our school in 2009? You can read her story in Dutch here >>>
This girl receives intensive physiotherapy now at Kiran Village (financially supported by Duniya). Today, we received this photo taken by Nisha, our teacher and social worker. She wrote to us about the treatment Pretty will receive, and the walking aids she will need. Also, her mother will be trained to do exercises with her at home. In the meantime, she will remain our little 'special' student in Duniya Education, helped by her classmates. |
April 05 - April 11 2010

At this moment, we have teachers and nurses being trained to teach and care for children with a visual impairment, a handicap or an intellectual disabilty. From September onward, they will all work in our new rehabilitation centre in Lai Chau, but for now, they receive an intense training in Hanoi.
Myrna Eijsenring, a specialist in 'Special Education' and our Vietnamese counterpart, Mr. Dong An, are supervising the training and organize visits to specialized centres, to meet and learn from other nurses and teachers.
This is an intense time for all involved, and we can hardly wait to welcome the first children to our centre!
Of course, we will keep you posted.

We appointed six new teachers who will work in our rehabilitaion centre in Lai Chau. Right now, they are receiving an intense training in Hanoi where they learn to teach disabled children. Mr. Dong An, coordinator of our project, sent us several photos and wrote:
"After Tet (Vietnamese New Year) 6 teachers came to the Central Pedagogic College. They are very enthusiastic with the course. 3 teachers have to bring their babies about 2 months, 3 months, and their mother to take care them. Accommodation was settled quickly. They live together in a room. It is simple room but cozy, convenience for knowledge exchange and help each other. The opening ceremony of the teacher training course was happening on 08/03/2010 - International Women Day".
Duniya welcomes our new teachers and we wish them a very fruitful course. We are looking forward to the moment these six teachers will make a big diffence for many disabled children who will live and learn in our centre.
Soon, four nurses will be trained as well. Preparations are made and of course, we will inform you about this later.

(c) Myrna Eijsenring - Vietnam
On this page >>, you can read about our special action for the operation of 60 children in Lao Cai (Vietnam). Myrna Eijsenring, who lives in Vietnam and who is our advisor for special education (of disabled children), is actively involved in the medical screening of these children and this is one of them: in this case an eye-problem.
Myrna works closely together with Mr. Dong An (our Vietnam based counterpart, the NGO CII) and keeps us posted at regular intervals. This child is member of the Flower H'Mong community, where the women wear very colourful jackets and skirts, often handmade by themselves.
March 8 - March 14 2010

It's blind Kabutar's first week working in the kitchen of Duniya Education, assisting our wonderful cook Anju (wearing a pink sari) and trying to convince teacher Nisha (blue dress) that she can do it! Today, she washed all the grapes.
March 1 - March 7 2010

Anushka is six years old and a student sponsored by Duniya. She is, however, not in our school. Her mother, Guriya, is a woman we already know for many years. She used to live in Nagwa, and we were there when she was married and we are still in touch now that she lives a little far from Nagwa. Her husband has a very low, and irregular income as a casual labourer. They live in a very small room, without any windows. But Anushka wants to study, and her parents stimulate this a lot. Duniya Education, however, is too far for her and thus Duniya decided to support the girl. We were there last month, and she proudly read Bengali, Hindi and English, which you can hear soon when we will show you a short film. Anouk visited the family yesterday (March 3) and took this photo.
