Centre II – Direct Support for Disabled Children (CII) and Bac Thai Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Centre (ORC) closely worked together for the operations of 38 disabled children in Lang Son province sponsored by Duniya Foundation. The operations went very well (no infections or other complications). However, care should be taken to inform the families of the necessity of revalidation after the operation. Parents didn't understand the need and didn't want their child to miss more days at school. We are working on a different strategy, about which we will inform you later. The photos in the video were taken by Dong An, director of CII and sent to us today (December 16).
Today, on the 6th of December 2009, Duniya Education celebrates it's second birthday. We, from Duniya Foundation in The Netherlands, would like to congratulate all our staff with their impressive work.
As many of you know, they had a very difficult start, being abandoned by their former employer Ashray Social Centre. But they never lost hope, they never stopped working hard and we never stopped believing in them and a good outcome. We can proudly say we have a very good school, with 85 regular students from the most backward situations imaginable and with a long waitinglist with children from the same background. At present, we are looking for a bigger building to accommodate these children as well.
For all of you who make this project happen: a birthday song in Hindi! Listen carefully and you will hear: duniya 'kahte hai', happy birthday to you' (Duniya - 'the world' - says, happy birthday to you). See our newsletter >>> we published today!
November 24, new schooluniforms for Duniya Education!
We received mail from our teacher Raj today. Apart from the bookkeeping, the registered envelope contained photos of our students. Some time ago, we approved new schooluniforms and our teachers said they thought of a new design. Bright colours and a different colour for every class. We gave them 'green light' for their own design and this is the result: blue! red! yellow!
Also, the envelope contained photos of 'Duniya Generation': the first group of students who passed their exams at our school and now continue studying at a 'big school' in town. They are doing very well and we are proud. It not only proves that children from very backward families can study more than their (often illiterate) parents ever did, but it also shows the quality of education in our own school. This first group was very well prepared.
The slideshow gives an impression of the new uniforms and show the Duniya Generation (bigger children). Although they are not in our school anymore, we still follow them and help them if they need guidance. They set an example for the next group of children.
Friday the 13th of November: bad luck?
A Friday and the 13th.... an unlucky day? Not for us! The R.K. Dalton School Sint Jozef from Heerenveen, invited us to receive 'a cheque' with the total amount the children collected during their sponsored run (read more >>>). € 2.701,52! An impressive achievement about which we are very happy and an amount that will directly be invested in our new revalidation centre in Lai Chau. We promised to keep the school posted about the developments in Vietnam. The school also posted a message on their website >>>, in Dutch.
On the 13th of October, the Lai Chau People Committee approved our planned revalidation project for Lai Chau Province. This is good news, for it means that the last official document has been signed and Duniya Foundation now officially cooperates with the Department of Labor Invalid & Social Affairs (DOLISA) as well as the Lai Chau People Committee on a project we so much value.
The province of Lai Chau will have it's first rehabilitation centre, a centre where children from poor (minority) backgrounds will have a chance to revalidate and receive special education by well trained staff.
Duniya Foundation is happy and proud to be part of this project and we are looking forward to a fruitful cooperation with our counterpart in Hanoi, CII – Direct Support for Disabled Children, to make this project a reality for many disabled children.
October 5th: Run for Revalidation!
On the 5th of October, children of the R. K. Daltonschool Sint-Josef in Heerenveen ran for Vietnam! A sponsored run to support the children in Vietnam. 'Juf Yvon Post' (teacher Yvon Post) left the school and suggested this very nice goodbye-party. They ran for a planned revalidation centre where 70 handicapped children will live and learn. We will show you photos soon!

'Juf Yvon Post' (teacher Yvon Post) left the school and suggested this very nice goodbye-party. Mirjam of Duniya went to the school and talked about Vietnam and the project in all classes. We decorated the school with photos, dresses, minority items etc. from Vietnam and the children were very curious and asked many questions.
